Each poem is a pocket-sized pearl, the collection as a whole stark and beautiful as waking up to a snow-filled landscape. Many of the poems reference morning and the seasons, and although there is a haunting tone to many there is also a sense of hope that the sadness is transient as time itself. There is an excellent use of both form and language, with many of the lines sticking with me long after reading them, such as ‘silence has no \/ letters’, ‘I watch my coffee \/ stir itself’ and ‘October shuffles in \/ a great-uncle cardiganed \/ in woollen earth tones’. The book’s dedication is to ‘Obadiah, who wasted no words in getting to the point.’ This collection wastes no words in getting to the heart.
